The car seems to be a place where I do my reflecting and where God shows me Him. I don’t know why He chooses the car so much; it’s probably because there are fewer distractions there for me. There are neither computers nor televisions nor messes that I should consider cleaning in my car. Tonight was no exception. And He chose to reveal more of Himself to me on my short drive home, tonight.
Before leaving for my home, I was in Melinda and Chris’ driveway talking to them a bit to wind down the evening. As Melinda and I were talking, Michaela returned to the out of doors after she had gone straight to her bedroom once we got back to their place from the 4th festivities; she was dressed in her nightgown, already, and barefoot. She walked up to me and gave me a hug. I kissed the top of her head and just as she was walking away, she said “I love you.” Of course, I returned the sentiment. It made my heart smile. I could feel the smile on my heart–a smile so big that it was blissfully in pain. We know that kind of smile–the kind that cause our cheeks to hurt. My heart’s cheeks were in that sort of pain.
I have to think about God’s friendship with us. He expresses that friendship directly, through daily conversations, sunsets, and unexpected gifts, among other things. We have an holy Friendship with Him, made possible through His Son’s sacrifice. It’s free and it is truly amazing. As many words and combination of words as there are, no one can truly capture the pure wonderfulness of Him: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
But He sends us little nuggets of Himself within His children so that our wordless souls may attempt to comprehend Him. Of course these children rarely realize that they have played the accomplice of God’s love because we delighted victims are usually effected in unexpected ways and fail to tell the perpetrators of the delight God brought us through them. (Although, we will apparently have the chance to do so once we’re all in Glory, or whatever.) While we Christians aren’t perfect, we do make marvelous choices on rare occasions (some of you make these choices more than rarely) which lead to positive eternal impacts on the souls of others. Sometimes we allow Christ to be a friend to others through ourselves– friends to the impoverished, depressed, or even seemingly friendless.
At any rate, there’s friendship and there’s Friendship. We are God’s Friends. I know it. I feel it. I can’t explain it. He is my Friend. He is directly my Friend; He grants me friendship with others so that He can be my Friend through them; and He is a Friend of others through me [hopefully].
“Friend, there will never be a Friend as dear to me as You; there will never be another closer than a brother. Friend, always worth the wait, faithful as the day. You say we are friends.” –Israel Houghton and New Breed
