Today is day 27 of the #iheartBible challenge that I’m hosting. If you have joined up, hooray! I’m glad you’re here. If you want to join up, then awesomesauce! Check out the challenge post for details and join in on the linky so we can all read one another’s posts during the challenge. I love Jesus and blogging, so I’m glad to see people joining in. We’d love to have you join, too. It’s never too late, even though tomorrow is the last day!
Today’s verse is Psalm 133.1. Read it below in its context (Why do I care about context?):
1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil on the head,
running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!
3 It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
life forevermore.
This verse has a very strange immediate context. Oil running don on the beard of Aaron? That sounds pretty gross to me.
Oh, but, you know, there’s more. Two points to make here.
Firstly, the oil poured on Aaron was anointing oil used to anoint Aaron as a high priest of God. There was so much oil poured over him–not a little dab or tiny drop–that it soaked him to the fringes of his beard and the hem of his garment. In short, the oil enveloped him.
Secondly, this psalm is one that the people of God would sing as they pilgrimaged up the mountain to Jerusalem to worship the lord. The oil represents the Holy Spirit; true unity can only occur when we are enveloped by the Holy Spirit.
Epic, right?
I’m glad, because that oil thing in the beard seemed pretty gross to me.
Have you ever experienced unity in the Holy Spirit? How would you describe it?
Love,
