So Much Icing

A while back, my lovely mother and I discussed God’s promises.  Or, perhaps more accurately, we discussed the misconception of God’s promises.

You see, God promised He’d take care of us, His children.  Forever.  This pretty much means that we’re promised oxygen and food and clothing.  Matthew 6.25 says “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

So, in terms of this post, basic food, drink and clothing will be called cake.

In Matthew 6.25, we do not find a promise that we’ll always like the food provided.  [Do you know me?  I'm a very picky eater.]  This verse does not promise we’ll have the top-of-the-line, high fashion clothing.  Going a littler further here: Nowhere in the Bible do we find an explicit promise that we’ll have an impressive resume or all the shoes we could ever wear or scrumptious dinners every night of the week.  God’s word doesn’t promise a new car or even your very own shelter.

All that stuff is icing. Icing on the cake.

I can think of endless examples of Christians who act as though God delivered on His promises when in reality He blessed the cake with icing, so to speak.

Cake may include any job which allows you to supply food, drink and clothing for yourself.  Cake may include a car which allows you to get to and from your job which allows you to supply yourself food, drink and clothing.  Cake may also include free lodging at your parents’ so you might maintain a car to drive to work so that you might make money to supply yourself food, drink, and clothing.  Or cake may include a place of rest [like a home, apartment, or cot in a shelter] which allows you to rest so that you might effectively work a job in order to supply yourself food, drink and clothing.  Basic concepts here.

My friends and I made some "dessert pizzas" last week. Cooke + icing + fruits! Sounds like God's gifts times infinity!

Icing is all the other stuff.  A car with no rust.  An apartment with actual pictures on the
wall.  Yummy and healthy foods.  The love of a Godly husband.  Traveling the world.  An iPhone.  Eye glasses.  Spring break.  The Internet, complete with fabulous blogs [like this] and information at our fingertips and media which lets us keep in contact with friends and family near and far.  A few pairs of matching shoes.  Cushioned chairs in coffee shops like the one in which I currently sit.  Waking up every day.  Icing.  Icing, I say.

Now, clearly, icing is not a bad thing.  Icing is most definitely a gift from God.  A gift!  Have you ever eaten a cupcake without icing?  Not repulsive, right?  Completely palatable.  Most, however, prefer to add some sort of icing: chocolate, vanilla, butter cream, etc.  The icing simply makes it better.

I’ve quite a collection of icing.  As discontent as I feel sometimes, the reality is that I am quite cared for by my savior.  God has been so stinkin’ good to me and The Hunk.  I could list my icing for pages and pages.

What about you?  What is your icing?

Sweetly,

PS: I prefer my cupcakes without icing.  This fact should not negate any previous posts.

Catch-up planning

Wow, it’s been a while since I updated.  Here’s a quick overview of my wedding accomplishments in the last couple of months:

  • Last Saturday, I helpd a party at my house,  inviting people to come over and help me put together my invitations.  This involved applying address labels and return address labels, stuffing RSVP envelopes, tieing ribbons into knots around the invitations, stuffing the envelopes (including the RSVP cards, invites, and a card with our website and email address on it), and sealing the envelopes.  I kept it pretty simple and was excited to have it done in one party–five hours long.  I had from three to seven people there at any one time.  It was goodThe bad news: mailing invitations with ribbons on them means the sender pays a 20 cent surcharge per envelope.  I wish I’d known this; I love my invitations, but I’m ticked that I didn’t know that.  I would have saved $20 if I’d known that.  I have yet to put the stamps on the envelopes and hope to do that tonight.  The post office workers told me that a square envelope often costs more than a dollar each.  Yikes!
  • Seth and I reserved the tuxes at a place in Columbus, OH: OP Gallo.  Simple black tuxes with green vests and ties.  Seth, of course, will wear a white tie/vest.  He’s secretly excited about being dressed up. But obviously more excited to see me in white. :)
  • I ordered some thank you postcards and return address labels from VistaPrint.  It’s a good place to find free/cheap print items.  I think they’ve officially flagged me as a wedding person, though, so my discounts may be ending soon.
  • We’ve officially reserved our honeymoon lodging (aside from what his parents are giving us).  Our honeymoon will be a little over two weeks long.  We’ll spend our wedding night at the hotel, then three nights at a cabin.  Then we’ll take off to Greece, where we’ll stay at a hotel in Athens for a couple of days before spending a week in Patras, Greece.  We plan to visit a couple places on the Peloponnese, like ancient Corinth or Olympia.  We’ll return to Athens for a day before flying back to the states.  As you can imagine, we’re sorta looking forward to it.
  • We had our tasting for the reception.  The food is YUMMY and we’re excited that guests will have three options for their main course.  We still have to choose what style of napkin fold we want.
  • Mom and I met with a baker.  She bakes from her home and calls  her business SweethingsCakes.  She’s inexpensive compared to anyplace else I looked; this is probably because she works from home.  She does a lot of baking, too.
  • Bridesmaids dresses arrived!  My girls are in the process of getting adjustments made if necessary.
  • I reserved my wedding ceremony musicians.  My friend Missy will be playing piano; Denny will play violin; Jeremy will sing and play guitar.  We have our songs picked out–except for one.
  • Seth and I took the wedding band to my jewelry connection; she’s going to shine it up and dip it to make it white gold.  We ordered Seth’s wedding band (yay!) and looked at possible gifts for people involved in our wedding.

I have a bunch of things still left on the list.  Some of them will take longer to do than others.

  • Get together a music playlits for my friend, Todd, who will be DJing the wedding.
  • Finalize flower order
  • Finalize cake order
  • Make cardbox
  • Purchase gifts for people
  • Actually stamp and send invitations
  • Buy honeymoon clothes
  • Have a bustle installed on my dress
  • Recieve and organize RSVPs
  • Attend a shower or three!
  • Design and make/order programs
  • Buy shoes for the big day

Back in the groove and mooovin’ right along

Since the holidays ended and I began getting back into wedding planning, Seth and I have accomplished a lot:

  • The account for vests and ties has been started and the guys now know what to do to reserve them.  We will be getting them from OP Gallo in Columbus, Ohio.
  • The rehearsal dinner is taken care of: GameWorks at Newport on the Levee; Seth and I are very excited to get to play with our family and friends the evening before the wedding!  It should be a blast!
  • Mom and I reserved our baker: Sweet Things  I’m very excited about the cake!  We’re going to have two layers decorated to match our invitations.  The other two layers will have pearl dots on them.  If we order about 3 or 4 buds from our florist, my baker will add those flowers to the cake, as well.  Mom and I also went out and picked out the ribbon for the cake.  It’s perfect! Seth and I still need to choose the topper.
  • I bought the rope we’ll tie when we actually “tie the knot” during the ceremony.  I need to get a ring to attach them to, though.
  • We reserved our honeymoon flights.  We’re currently looking to map out more of our lodging information over the 2 week + span. :)

There is, of course, a lot more to do.  But at least I’ve gotten a lot done in this short amount of time. I’m very pleased!

Holidays: Made me slack

Over the holiday season, I got almost nothing done by way of planning the wedding.  I logged on to my theknot.com site, today, only to find a buttload of past-due items on my checklist.  Yikes!

Things I need to take care of this month:

  • Cake
  • Rehearsal dinner
  • Ceremony music
  • Honeymoon flight bookings

In that bullet list, it doesn’t sound as bad, but those points have subpoints, as well.  Eek!

Today, I’ve started creating a day-of timeline in Excel.  It’s a working document, but Seth and I will share it on our dropbox account, so we can both see it and collaborate.

Also, since Seth and I are such big planners, we’ve started playing around with GoogleWave.  It’s an interesting collaboration device; I hope it continues to build and becomes something more companies use to collaborate.  I like it, so far.
